This is a wonderful documentary series on the Ganges river by the BBC. Stunning visuals and informative narration, this is one of the best TV series i've watched on India. I had watched this series a couple of years back and now after spending nearly two months in Rishikesh and Uttarkashi, i felt like watching this again. So i searched the internet and found these videos on YouTube.Â
It is a 3 part series starting from the origin of the river at Dev Bhoomi (land of the gods), following it all the way to the wetlands of the Sunderbans where the mighty Ganges finally meets the sea. Not before it dramatically reshapes the culture and the layout of the land it traverses.Â

Follow the Ganges on the last leg of its journey through the sunderbans. Here you'll encounter the worlds largest population of man eating tigers, honey collectors who risk their lives everytime they venture into the jungle, fishermen who follow river Dolphins to lead them to the fish and use Otters to round up the fish and chase them into the nets. Life here can be a struggle with constant erosion, extreme drought in the summers and the threat of raging floods in the rainy season. But the river also brings with it the riches of the Himalayas in the form of silt, thus making this region one of the most fertile in the world. |
