The floating markets of Bangkok are a photographers delight. As well as being colorful, they offer a wonderful glimpse into the traditional market practices of the river dwelling Thai.

Yes, the markets are commercialized for the benefit of the tourists. But in doing so, they have not lost their original charm, they remain quintessentially Thai, as the below photos will show.

I visited the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market, located some 80km southwest of Bangkok. It is the most popular of all the floating markets around Bangkok, hence also the most touristy. But still, i found the experience to be authentic and managed to have a wonderful time.

The best time to visit the floating market is early in the morning between 7am to 9am. It is when the markets will be at their most authentic with most of the dealings catering to the locals. Around 9am the tourists start to arrive and things tend to get a bit chaotic for the next couple of hours. Everything winds down by midday.

The center of the canal is kept clear for two-way boat traffic but the sides are where the action is. Along both banks of the canals, there numerous boat stalls selling stuff ranging from drool inducing snacks and sweets to fresh tasty fruits. Its hard to keep your taste buds on leash here.

The fruits were fresh. Everything felt as if they've been just plucked from the trees nearby and bought here to be sold. Positively mouth watering.

The best way to attract customers in the chaos is to market effectively. Most of the vendors had clear signs mentioning the price of their products, i thought it was a brilliant move.

When photographing a busy scene such as this floating market, it is recommended that you keep shifting postions to capture the action from different points of view. I'am always a big fan of overhead shots and try to incorporate them wherever possible, as you can see here the overhead shot worked out pretty well.

Sadly, apart from the Lychees, i cannot name any of the fruits on her boat. But i do love this picture though. Had to process this image in Lightroom to selectively add more lighting to her face. This turned out to be my favorite image from this set. Whats yours ?

I love how this picture has a washed out movie posted look. The reason probably is because the focus is on the hats instead of the boy's face giving him a soft blurry look.

Sometimes it pays to isolate interesting elements into a separate frame. It put my Canon 70-200 f4L IS lens to good use on this shoot.

Lots of knick knacks available to cater to the tourists. They are lovely though. It'll make for wonderful gifts.

This place is not only popular with the international tourists. Even the local Thais flock to these markets in huge numbers. And why wouldn't they... the markets are amazing.
